Tasting notes

A ruby red color in the glass, our 2018 Pinot Noir exuberates black cherry aromas with faint hints of vanilla and
baking spice. The palate is rich and long with lingering preserved red fruit flavors. - David Nakaji, Winemaker

Vintage Notes

The 2018 growing season was one of the mildest and smoothest in recent memory. Mild spring weather led to good fruit set in most
varietals and moderate weather throughout the year made for ideal growing conditions. There were no major heat spikes, which gave us longer hang-time and great ripening on the vine. While a fairly long harvest, the 2018 crop delivered fruit with complex flavors and was of excellent quality. All the fruit for this wine entered our winery from August 21st to October 30th, 2018 at optimal ripeness.

Viticulture

The fruit for our 2018 Pinot Noir comes from the Central Coast with 60% coming from Sta. Rita Hills and 40% coming from our sister
property Chalone Estate. Perfect for growing Pinot Noir, our vineyards nestled in the Sta. Rita Hills are marine-based and the weather
is consistently cool thanks to moist ocean breezes. The thin, limestone-rich soils of Chalone Vineyard produce low yields of grapes
bursting with rich, intense flavors and impeccable balance.

Vinification

All lots were de-stemmed gently to preserve the whole berries. We cold soaked for an average of three days before inoculation. During fermentation, the wine was pumped over its skins two to three times a day in closed top stainless steel tanks. Press fractions were kept separate and fined to remove any harsh or raisin-like flavors. Each lot was then transferred into French oak barrels and aged until bottling in July 2019.
